Name: Merlin
Canon: Disney Animated Canon
OU/AU/OC: OU
Canon Point: Some time after the end of The Sword in the Stone
History: Right here, under 'The Sword in the Stone'
Personality: On his best day, Merlin is somewhere between a wise old teacher and a kindly old grandfather. While he may have got a little eccentric in his old age, and it sometimes takes a while for his brain to catch up to his ears, he always has his head more-or-less on straight. He never fails to extend a caring hand to any young lad or lass in need of guidance, and is hardly ever without a tune on his lips and a bit of sage wisdom to offer.
That's not to say he's without his faults, however. Merlin's absent-mindedness is coupled with his clumsiness, and he often ends up tripping over himself (usually over his excessive beard). He's also got something of a blustery temper, and is quick to get indignant whenever questioned. Worst of all, however, is his complete lack of patience with the world around him. Either everything is too primitive or too modern, either way being complicated and messy, and Merlin has little to no respect for those who favour brute force over higher thinking.
Still, for that same reason, Merlin is a devout futurist and intellectual. To him, knowledge and wisdom are the true strength of a person, and the way forward is through innovation and invention. To this end, he sometimes sees fit to seek out any young soul who could amount to something, and raise them through the finest schooling he can provide. If that's not enough, then, well... perhaps a few more 'practical' lessons can be taught, with a little magic here and there...
Strengths: As with most Merlins, this one excels at magic. His usual tricks involve transmogrifying himself and others into different animals, or prompting inanimate objects to come to life and float through the air. However, he is also capable of shrinking objects, conjuring weather, and disappearing in a puff of smoke. Beyond even that, Merlin has demonstrated the ability to travel through time, from medieval periods to the 20th century and back again. Finally, he possesses clairvoyance enough see far and wide and into the future, but it should be noted that he can't see everything, nor know the full significance of his premonitions.
Note: For the sake of the game, powers will be nerfed accordingly. For instance, he cannot change himself or others into their real species, and his precognition and time traveling will be inactive unless specified by the mod.
Weaknesses: For all his mental prowess, Merlin tends to be rather forgetful, easily confused, and incredibly clumsy. Also, given his lean towards scholarliness, and his refusal to rely on brute force, his physical strength isn't up to much, even as an animal.
Possessions: The only thing I can think of would be his hat, his glasses, and his impertinent living sugar bowl.
Pony/Animal Type: Unicorn
Cutie Mark: A magic wand, resting against a stack of books
Pony Picture: (I'd have included one here, but the Pony Creator doesn't do his beard justice)
First Person:
[The camera jerks around, showing blurred views of a room. There’s a great deal of fumbling sounds, as well as someone’s exasperated fumfering. Finally, the camera rights itself, in front of the old wizard’s face]
Ah! There we are. Hello there, one and all! Merlin here, with the morning’s progress report. Now, as you can see, I’ve finally managed to work out the kinks in the camerawork. No more recordings obscured by beard, that’s for sure, eh? Heh heh. Oh, and, ah, I do appreciate the suggestions some of you have provided for getting into practice with these sorts of contraptions. After all, it has been a while since I visited the 21st century, so I'll have to get reaccustomed to these devices sooner or later. Dyy-ah, however, I'm-I’m afraid I will have to draw the line at ‘selfies’, I fear. N-now, that’s not to say I’m altogether against self expression through picture taking, vapid and conceited as it may be erhem! No, I’m afraid I’m getting too far on in years for that sort of nonsense. I fear the only way a duckface from me might be appealing is if I, eh… well, actually became a duck.
So! At any rate, business as usual from here on out, AND if you’re watching, my dear student, I’ll expect those papers in the morning. Hrm. Now without any further ado, I'd just like to close this video by s-
Third Person:
Merlin dropped down into his armchair with a thump, sending up a mushroom cloud of dust, and lit his pipe as he looked around the room, admiring his handiwork. The new home was a little snug, perhaps, so it had been a bit of a bother finding where to put all of his belongings, but he’d managed with worse accommodation before.
Currently, all the books were stacked to the left, and the chemistry sets to the right. There hadn’t been a whole lot of space for the books, so a shelf’s worth or two were still partly shrunk. The brooms were over by the fireplace, tied to a table leg with a bundle of twine. For some reason, they’d decided to start sweeping right in the middle of unpacking, and they’d got underfoot enough times that Merlin has finally lost his temper and had them restrained. He’d have to check that spell later. Maybe their dust sensitivity needed a little fine-tuning.
Finally, over in the far corner was the dinner table, with chairs arranged at perfect 45-degree angles. Perhaps the table would have looked better a little further to the left, but there was a cold draft somewhere in that direction, so that couldn’t be helped. Beside the table, there was that fancy new oak and glass cabinet. Perhaps a little ostentatious compared to the rest of the room, but it seemed to get along well with the other furniture. All the crockery and cutlery were neatly stacked inside. Sugar bowl, as usual, had decided to be difficult, but in the end he was coerced inside.
Tomorrow, Merlin thought, he might set out for supplies, and start rebuilding his collection of gizmos and functioning miniature vehicles. But for now, it was time to relax, and ruminate on the future. Melting into his chair, Merlin puffed a few clouds, and looked for any new visions appearing in the murky grey.
